Financial Calculations for Lawyers

Course Overview:
Many areas of law require a working knowledge of financial calculations. For example, Tort Law Practice often involves calculating the present value of lost future wages. Family Law Practice involves valuing a stream of future income or a deferred compensation plan. Tax Law Practice necessitates an understanding of the Internal Revenue Code time value of money sections, which themselves require a working knowledge of financial calculations. Inexpensive calculators have alleviated the need for lawyers to understand the actual formulas; however, because the calculators and their respective manuals are often complicated, lawyers lacking an accounting or finance background may shy away from this important area of law. Lawyers must have an understanding of financial calculations in order to communicate effectively with expert witnesses, judges, juries, and clients on matters of finance.
This CLE course:
  • provides a basic explanation of the use and application of a typical hand-held financial calculator, the Hewlett Packard 10 Bii.
  • discusses the legal system’s use of financial terminology.
  • includes a downloadable JavaScript Financial Calculator that solves most of the problems faced by lawyers.

Format:
Financial Calculations for Lawyers is a self-study program offered completely online. The course is divided into 14 sections, each with narrated slides that last 10-15 minutes, with the exception of the module on interest rate terminology, which is significantly longer. In addition to the slides, sample problems are available to practice using the calculations. The total runtime for the presentations is 4.5 hours, but extra time will be needed to complete optional sample problems.

Registration Information:
Cost: $165 for Bar members
Registration: $15
CLE Credits: 5
Course Number: 3884 6
Registration is currently available only through DCE at the University of Florida. The Financial Calculations For Lawyers Book and Calculator files are available here . The lecture files will be posted soon on this site. They are available in flash format.
